As someone who has been working in Photoshop for a while now, and feels rather comfortable with it too, working in illustrator was a rather strange jump to make. For starters, the image isn't editable by eraser and brush alone, instead, you must work with an array of different anchor points created by pencils and pen tools, or edit already existing shapes. Another big difference is that the brush tools actually adjust themselves to be smoother once you finished drawing your line. The paint bucket only works if you use it on live images, and there is even a custom shape tool where you can merge already existing shapes.
Now, call me old school, but personally I prefer working in Photoshop, I mean, Illustrator is great for people who aren't as artistic in the sense that you are able to feely edit the shapes already existing without having to redraw anything, but for someone like me who is already used to drawing in the traditional sense, I can find this very annoying and frustrating at times. Though, that's really the only down side I really have, and after spending some time working in it, I feel pretty skilled in it already. The two programs definitely have different feels to them, but that's not a problem if you know what you want to make in what program you want to make it in.
